In terms of the campaign, it looks as though Sledgehammer is adding female characters to Call of Duty: WW2 in the same manner that Treyarch did back when it developed Call of Duty 3, by including French resistance fighters. However, Sledgehammer appears to be taking it a step further by having players actually play as a female character during a portion of the campaign, though the extent of Rousseau’s role is unknown at this time.
Besides learning that female characters will be included in the campaign, Sledgehammer also reiterated that female soldiers will be featured in Call of Duty: WW2’s multiplayer mode. The last few games in the series have made it a point to allow players to customize their soldiers, including their gender, and so one has to imagine that customization is coming back for this entry.
In addition to the multiplayer and campaign, we now know that female characters will be in Call of Duty: WW2’s Zombies mode as well. At the time of this writing, Zombies is still a mystery, but it wouldn’t be the first time females were included as playable characters in the popular game mode.
Zombies and multiplayer aside, Call of Duty: WW2’s inclusion of female characters will stay historically accurate in the story campaign thanks to the real world female French resistance fighters. It will be interesting to see if Sledgehammer’s explanation eases concerns, or if some fans will still complain about the game’s female characters.
Call of Duty: WW2 will launch on November 3rd for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
