While the Serious Sam franchise is one that has birthed a ton of standalone games and expansions, the series does not get the level of attention that one might expect after being around for 20+ years. It’s possible that one of the reasons it doesn’t get all that much attention is because there are just so many games that have been released. There’s also the fact that, as is the case with Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem, there isn’t much of a lead time between the announcement and the release to build up interest.

Siberian Mayhem was teased earlier this month and then given an official release date just three days later. Devolver Digital, Timeclock Studio, and Croteam announced the next Serious Sam game was arriving on January 25. This means that the game was teased, given an official release date, and is then launching within roughly three weeks.

Perhaps because of the short turnaround time, Devolver Digital’s most recent Serious Sam trailer shows off a good portion of the beginning of the title. The trailer is almost 11 minutes long and gives players a look at the very beginning of the game as Sam makes his way through what appears to be a desolate shipping yard.

Starting off with nothing more than a pistol, Sam is shown walking briskly through the area, first running into an enemy here and there before eventually getting swarmed by monsters from all sides. As has long been the case with the Serious Sam franchise, as he guns down baddies, the titular character has plenty of quips at the ready, such as “sorry, the only thing on the menu is lead.”

It’s hard to know exactly what to make of Siberian Mayhem getting teased, announced, and then launched all in the same month. This is the first entry in the series since the fall of 2020. The game that launched that year, Serious Sam 4, did not garner great reviews. Siberian Mayhem is technically a standalone expansion of that game, rather than a full entry all on its own, so it will be interesting to see how it is received.

Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem releases for PC on January 25.
