While Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is still getting story DLC in the future, it appears that might be all the love the series will receive for a while. A recent report from Eurogamer suggests that Eidos Montreal’s plan, stated by boss David Anfossi, to “deliver a deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games”, could be on hiatus following other massive commitments made by Square Enix to existing or emerging IPs.
The most promising of these new directions, Square’s partnership with Marvel to produce a series of games called The Avengers Project, is one that will see Eidos Montreal central to the project. Given the size and scale of the endeavor, however, which is scheduled to deliver multiple new Avengers games in the coming years, the report speculates that too many members of Eidos Montreal will be pulled away to work on The Avengers Project for the studio to meaningfully produce Deus Ex content as well.
Beyond the blockbuster deal between Square and Marvel, however, Eidos Montreal is also rumored to be in the early stages of production on the second Marvel game based around Guardians of the Galaxy. That, coupled with another entry into the recently rebooted Tomb Raider series to work on, seems to suggest that Eidos Montreal simply won’t have the time to indulge in another Deus Ex game for quite some time.
Whether or not the report is entirely true, the statement Square Enix gave Eurogamer is telling of where its priorities with Deus Ex lie - the publisher said that, while it was working on “content and updates for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided”, it was also devoting its talents to the Marvel Avengers project. That certainly sounds like Deus Ex is on the backburner, and the upcoming DLC for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided might be the last gamers see of Adam Jensen for years.
